Dying is hard to talk about. Even more so when it’s a loved one. Yet professional end-of-life caregiver Rami brings us into this world by telling the story of “Ilka,” a South-Asian woman who was struggling to let others help her provide palliative care for her aging father. Join Junia T, who was short-listed for the 2020 Polaris Music Prize, and multi-platinum producer Jarrel The Young, as they team up with Canada’s “Queen of Punk” Bif Naked, to tell this incredibly important story. It may be a tough topic to talk about, but just wait until you hear them sing about it. ALL FOOTAGE WAS FILMED PRIOR TO MARCH 2020. This episode contains original music. As part of the Grief Literacy Series hosted by Dying With Dignity, I was honoured to share how the approach of Cultural Humility affected how grieve, mourn, provide and receive support. In this recorded webinar, we explored:

  • What is Cultural Humility?

  • How does it infuse our grieving and state of bereavement?

  • By what means is it based on personal culture?

Myths of Hospice Care

"Learning to live by listening to the dying"

Hospice care is a type and philosophy of care that focuses on the palliation of a chronically ill, terminally ill or seriously ill individual's pain and symptoms, attending to their emotional and spiritual needs and delivering quality of life.

In this episode of Union of Ideas, I was honoured to be hosted in an effort to explore the art and practice hospice care experience and leadership. I shared that: “Drawing from nearly three decades of listening to the dying, their fears, hopes and loves, I've come to understand that we learn to truly live by examining our thoughts and feelings about dying. The experience has been life-changing and defining. Hearing people's stories, as well as their most intimate feelings about their living and dying, left an indelible imprint on how I engaged my life.”

Welcome to Union Of Ideas! Union of Ideas is a broadcast Panel Discussion with a guest speaker followed by a facilitated, open discussion with all participants. Union of Ideas is an inspired team collaboration managed by four members of Toronto Philosophy Meetup. For this episode, Joel and James are panelists, Katerina is discussion facilitator, and Eva is event coordinator. We meet biweekly on Tuesdays and host a new speaker each episode at 7:00 pm EST.

Caregiving for Someone Who Is Living with Cancer

This report by Sean Previl highlights the challenges of caregiving for someone living with cancer. I was honoured to be invited to share my perspectives and insights while working as a Case Manager for Kensington Health, in partnership with Wellspring Cancer Support for the Caregiver program.

When a person is diagnosed with cancer, it can have not only have an impact on the person who received the news but on those around them as well. Parents, spouses, children, friends: all of them can feel a range of emotions that come with the diagnosis but their focus on helping their loved one can often leave them drained of energy which in turn can create difficulties caring for the person with cancer.

As Sean Previl reports, finding support can help them in turn give help to the person battling the disease.
