Canadian Children's Grief Symposium: The Culturally Humble Approach to Children's Grief

The Culturally Humble Approach to Children’s Grief Support:

Grieving is a very individual and personalized experience. It is influenced and shaped by the very essence of who we are, and how we have lived our lives. All that we experience creates within us what is referred to as ‘personal culture’. With the incredible diversity of peoples that span our world, and the progressive domains with which diversity is defined today, we can no longer categorize people into boxes with how they grieve, and/or how they are supported in their bereavement. The approach to grief, especially that experienced by a child, needs to be aligned with the uniqueness of every individual, an engagement known as the Culturally Humble approach.

In this seminar we will explore:

i) what is the Cultural Humility and is it different from Cultural Sensitivity/Competence?

ii) how to apply a Cultural Humble approach to Children’s grief support.

iii) learn what is Personal Culture and how it can be expressed by a child who is grieving.

iv) recognize how Cultural Humility serves as the basis for Trauma Informed Care, including Antiracism and Anti-oppression.
