With the incredible diversity of peoples that span our region, and the progressive domains with which diversity is defined today, we cannot categorize people into boxes when we are engaging and serving them. The models of Cultural Competence and Cultural Sensitivity are antiquated and lacking in an aspect of individual expression and identity that can only be represented within the scope of ‘Personal Culture’. Through the utility of a Culturally Humble approach, we become the learner of another, and position ourselves to receive from them who they self-define within their own identity, influences, and self-expressions. This scope of service aligns with the foundational principles of Hospice Palliative Care and has become the gold standard to the provision of quality care.
